What is Accreditation and Why Should You Care about it?

Academic accreditation provides a stamp of approval for your program, department, or university. It says to the world at large: “this particular program has been evaluated by experienced and unbiased judges and has been deemed to meet or exceed appropriate standards.”

Accreditation of universities generally takes place through regional accrediting agencies. Weber State University falls under the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Schools. Every ten years, WSU prepares and then submits a comprehensive self-study to Northwest. Representatives from Northwest not only read the study, but also visit campus. They look into such items as faculty to student ratios, facilities, technology, learning outcomes, assessment of learning outcomes, curriculum, and so on. Weber’s accreditation was reaffirmed by Northwest five years ago.

Individual programs also can be accredited. Within the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities, our music program is accredited by NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) and our art program currently is applying for accreditation from NASD (National Association of Schools of Design).
