PARK CITY — “Gypsy” is ready to entertain you, as the rarely performed musical gem about the legendary queen of burlesque opens Friday at the Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theatre.
Director Tracy Callahan, associate professor of theater arts at Weber State University, has brought together a cast of performers from across the Wasatch Front and given a modern twist to this “musical fable.” The Dark Horse Company Theater production incorporates traditional song and dance with contemporary mediums, including projection and film.
The semiautobiographical tale of the legendary Gypsy Rose Lee captures the grit and glitter of life on the stage, coupled with the ferocious passion of a stage mother sculpting her daughter into a star — at any cost. As Louise, who becomes Gypsy Rose, is propelled to stardom by her mother Rose, she struggles to find her place in her mother’s heart. Her transformation from a shy girl living in the shadow of her sister June to a glamorous star are spun together in a whirl of vaudeville cheek, burlesque brass and musical gold.
“Gypsy” was written in 1959 by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is often cited by writers and critics as the greatest American musical. The rich score includes showstoppers such as “Small World,” “Let Me Entertain You” and “Everything’s Coming up Roses.”
“Gypsy” is presented as part of the “Musicals on Main” series at the Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main St., Park City. The show will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 6 p.m. Sundays, through July 31. Tickets are $15 to $30 and are available at www.egyptiantheatrecompany.org or by calling 435-649-9371.
