Arts and Humanities Endowed Scholar/Artist

PURPOSE

This award is intended to recognize outstanding accomplishments of faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities in the areas of scholarship/scholarly and artistic accomplishments and excellence in teaching and professional contributions.

ELIGIBILITY

Full-time faculty members holding a tenure track position are eligible to be considered for the Endowed Scholar/Artist Award in the College of Arts and Humanities provided that they have served Weber State University for one year.

Application/Nomination

A faculty member may be nominated for the award or may independently apply for the award. In either case, a faculty member must complete an application form in order to be considered by the selection committee. Applications and nominations should be submitted to the Dean’s office where application forms are also available.

The Award Selection Committee

The Award Selection Committee is to be chosen following the application/nomination process. Each department is to submit to the Dean two nominations for the committee (10 nominations.) From these nominations, the Dean will choose three faculty members. No more than one committee member may come from any one department. The Dean will notify these faculty members of their selection, and the committee will act as a “blind” committee (their identities will not be known beyond the committee and the Dean, who will assure the Vice President of Academic Affairs that there is no conflict of interest in the committee’s make-up.) The Dean will convene the three person committee and the three faculty members will deliberate and choose two outside members for the five member committee. Outside faculty members chosen for the committee must come from different colleges, from within or without the University, and the community.

The Selection Process

The five member Selection Committee will meet and choose the endowed scholar(s) according to the information submitted on the two page application/nomination form. Candidate will include information regarding their activities for the previous four academic years in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and professional contributions.

Announcement and Term

The announcement of the selection will be made by the Dean during the commencement exercises of the College of Arts and Humanities in the year preceding the beginning of the appointment. The appointment of the Endowed Scholar/Artist will be for three academic years. Appointments are limited to one term until multiple endowments are available.

Recipient’s Benefits and Obligations

During each year of the three-year term, the Endowed Scholar/Artist will receive $5,000 in support. The recipient may elect to receive this money as pay (subject to a 22% reduction toward benefits and taxes) or as professional support (funding for travel, books, etc.)..

Recipients of the Endowed Scholar/Artist Award must write a letter every six months detailing the activities and accomplishments facilitated by the Faculty Endowment Award. This letter will be forwarded to the donor by the WSU Development Office.
